The bund was a beach originally. After Shanghai opened as a trading port in 1846, it is called "The Bund" by westerners and translated into Chinese "Waitan" or "Huangputan".

After the roads on the bund were constructed, banks and foreign firms built their headquarters here. Among them, the former Banque de liino-Chine built in 1914, Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in 1923, the Customs House in 1927,Bank of China in 1937, etc. All buildings were built in different architectural styles as the world architecture collection. At night, all buildings are illuminated, it brings a sizzling glory, prosperity of Shanghai to an incredible one. In the early morning, local people exercise in the Parks or at the Bund doing Taiji (Chinese Shadow boxing), Wushu (Chinese martial arts) and ballroom dancing there. It is always the best place to see the history and future of this metropolitan.
